Description
| The aim of this study was to identify social and physical factors that influence dietary behaviours in adolescents and adults living in urban Ghana and Kenya. In 2017-2018, a qualitative study was conducted amongst adolescents and adults aged ≥13 years living in socio-economically deprived urban neighbourhoods in Accra, Ghana (n=30) and Nairobi, Kenya (n=48).
Participants used photography to identify characteristics in their social and physical environment that drive their dietary behaviours. Specifically, participants were asked to take five photographs in relation to the following themes: i. a place where you eat food and/or drink; ii. something that makes eating healthy difficult for you; iii. something that makes eating healthy easy for you; iv. something that influences what you eat in your area/neighbourhood; v. a person that influences your food or drink choices in your area/neighbourhood. Follow-up interviews focused on participants telling the ‘stories’ of their photographs. Data are provided for transcripts without photographs subject to several conditions.
Data available:
- 78 qualitative interviews transcripts (about 10 pages each), anonymized manually after collection: transmitted upon agreement and regulatory compliance, refer to "Terms of Use" statement;
- documentation: interview guide and informed consent form.
