Description

This dataset extends the World Database on Protected Areas (WDPA) with time-bounded states documenting boundary modifications, status reclassifications, governance changes, temporary protections, and internal zoning. It covers 123 terrestrial protected areas in Madagascar from 2000 to 2025.

Data were compiled by integrating historical archive snapshots, national protected-area system datasets, legal texts from the national legislative database, and expert literature. All amendments are stored in a version-controlled YAML registry and consolidated through deterministic rules. A consolidated version based on the November 2025 WDPA release and these amendments is provided in RDS, Parquet, and GeoPackage formats.

Important notice: the WDPA-derived files provided in this dataset constitute a Madagascar-only historical dataset based on the November 2025 WDPA release. They may therefore become outdated and should not be considered the latest official protected and conserved area data. For the latest official data, users should consult Protected Planet. Redistribution of these Madagascar-specific WDPA-derived outputs has been authorized by UNEP-WCMC for this research dataset.

To reproduce an up-to-date extended version of the WDPA, users can combine the amendment registry provided here with the latest WDPA release available from Protected Planet and re-run the consolidation workflow available in the associated GitHub repository.
