Climate data rescue of Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos

Accronyme : Climate Data Rescue

This database brings together in a single data warehouse all the meteorological data produced during the colonial period in Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos by the French Navy and military hospitals at the end of the 19th century, and by the Indochina Meteorological Service from 1897 to 1942. It also includes meteorological data from Service météorologiques du Haut Commissariat de la France en Indochine from 1949 to 1955. After 1955, and from the same service (under the Republic of South Viet-Nam) the database also include meteorological data for the Vietnamese southern stations and also one's from Cambodia and Laos. All together these data span from 1876 to 1973.

Founder : This database is one of the outcomes of the GEMMES Vietnam 2 research program founded by AFD. In the frame of this program, the WP1 coordinated by Dr. Frédéric THOMAS (IRD) and Assoc.Prof. NGO Duc Thanh (USTH) aims to build an historical meteorological database for Vietmam in order to introduce historic meteorological data in contemporary models of climate change. Such data, which are currently only available in old printed documents are very valuable to better understand past Vietnamese climate and its evolution in the context of climate change. However, these data are currently hardly accessible to the scientific community and are at risk of being lost in the future due to lack of fundings and retirement of many archivists. Hence, there is a need for “data rescue” activities and digitalization of the data to make them available to the scientific communities and future generations.
