Description
| Across the vast diversity of vascular plants on Earth, around 6,000 species have been used as food sources for humans. Yet, only nine crops provide more than 60% of the calories consumed worldwide. In the face of accelerating climate change, biodiversity loss, and malnutrition, there is an urgent need to broaden the range of food crops supporting sustainable agriculture and resilient food systems. Here, we support efforts to effectively mobilize crop diversity by compiling a comprehensive list of 2,449 crop species used for food. Using multiple sources of information, we provide associated data on functional traits, human uses, and global distribution across native and introduced ranges. Up to now, this information remained fragmented across multiple and heterogeneous databases that vary in scope, structure, and standards.
Our dataset is structured around 10 tables:
- List of 2,449 crop species with taxonomic names standardized with the WCVP
- Description of crop species sources
- Links between crop species and sources
- Links between 98 uses and those species
- Native area from the WCVP
- Introduced area from the WCVP
- Number of occurrences per country
- Number of occurrences per WGSRPD areas
- Functional trait values
- Production data between 2015-2020 from FAOstat
