The MiPPAD randomized trial was set up in 2009 to compare the effectiveness of two intermittent preventive treatments against malaria during pregnancy, sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine and mefloquine. This trial took place in several sub-Saharan African countries: Benin, Mozambique, Gabon, and Tanzania. Since then, the children from this trial have been monitored in Benin in order to better understand the risk factors for children's health. This involves monitoring approximately 1,200 mothers and children in the Allada district of Benin since 2009. In Mozambique, the children were assessed in the same way at the age of 13.
